Junior Firefighter Program
Tomorrow’s firefighters are trained today, starting with the Newton Fire Department’s junior firefighter program. Newton residents between the ages of 14 and 17 are eligible to apply for membership as a Junior Firefighter. There are few activities for teens which are as thrilling and rewarding as becoming a junior firefighter. Working with the fire department also teaches valuable life skills such as leadership, teamwork, and responsibility.
By attending regular training drills, junior firefighters learn fundamental firefighting techniques working alongside experienced Newton firefighters. Safety is a top priority and is learned through training with real firefighting equipment under strict supervision.
Upon demonstrating sound judgment and a good working knowledge of firefighting techniques and safety practices, juniors can respond to actual fire calls under the strict supervision of trained firefighters on the scene. This enables the juniors to learn skills in the firehouse, then observe how firefighters actually employ those skills in the field. They can also put their knowledge to work by assisting firefighters on scene with tasks such as retrieving equipment, changing air bottles, and repacking hose on the fire trucks.
Upon reaching 18 years old, junior firefighters are well prepared to begin training at the Sussex County Public Safety Training Academy and become full-fledged Newton firefighters.
